چکیده

The rugged mountainous regions of the deep seafloor hold both great scientific interest as well a host of difficult challenges for autonomous robots. Exploiting its abilities for precise navigation, trackline following, and bottom-following in rough terrain, the Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) collected fine-scale bathymetry, magnetics, temperature, optical backscatter, and conductivity over a rugged, neovolcanic and active tectonic zone of the southern East Pacific Rise (18°S). These data sets were combined to produce a variety of maps showing details of the terrain as well as hydrother-mal venting.

Robotic tools for deep water archaeology: Surveying an ancient shipwreck with an autonomous underwater vehicle

The goals of this field note are twofold. First, we detail the operations and discuss the results of the 2005 Chios ancient shipwreck survey. This survey was conducted by an international team of engineers, archaeologists and natural scientists off the Greek island of Chios in the northeastern Aegean Sea using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) built specifically for high-resolution site in...

Modeling Rugged Terrain by Mobile Robots with Multiple Sensors

Modeling the environment is an essential capability for autonomous robots. To navigate and manipulate without direct human control, autonomous robots must sense the environment, model the environment, and plan and execute actions based on information from the model. Perceiving and mapping rugged terrain from multiple sensor data is an important problem for autonomous navigation and manipulation...

Global estimates of seafloor slope from single-beam ship soundings

[1] Rough topography on the ocean floor is a source of ocean mixing which is of interest to both physical oceanography and climate science. Most mixing has been attributed to high slopes of the large-scale structures of the deep ocean floor such as seamounts, continental margins, and mid-ocean ridge axes. In this paper, we show the small-scale but ubiquitous abyssal hills and fracture zones dom...

Terrain Perception for DEMO III

The Demo III program has as its primary focus the development of autonomous mobility for a small rugged cross country vehicle. Enabling vision based terrain perception technology for classification of scene geometry and material is currently under development at JPL. In this paper we report recent progress on both stereo-based obstacle detection and terrain cover colorbased classification. Our ...

An Evaluation Methodology for Autonomous Mobile Robots for Planetary Exploration

We report here on a new technique to evaluate autonomous mobile robots built for exploring rugged terrain such as is found on planetary surfaces. The dynamics of both wheeled and legged robots interacting with deformable soil (sand) and obstacles are notoriously complex and nonlinear. This paper introduces a novel statistical methodology for the evaluation of such robots. We report on work in p...
